DMN, BPMN, CMMN: Synergy for Effective Decision Management
The DMN standard enables transparent modeling of business decisions, complementing BPMN and CMMN for comprehensive process automation.
Media outlet Scriptum has published an article discussing the DMN (Decision Model and Notation) standard and its synergy with BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) and CMMN (Case Management Model and Notation). Together, these standards form a powerful toolkit for modeling and automating business processes and decision-making.
DMN is a standard developed for transparently modeling business decisions and the rules by which they are made. Unlike BPMN, which describes the sequence of actions in a process, DMN focuses on the logic of ‘how’ a particular decision is made. This allows for the separation of logic from the process, making rules transparent and enabling quick changes without redesigning the entire diagram.
The primary tools of DMN are Decision Requirements Diagrams (DRDs), which provide an overview of decision dependencies, and Decision Tables, which conveniently describe ‘condition-result’ logic in an understandable format. When combined with BPMN, which models clear processes, and CMMN, which manages flexible, event-driven cases, DMN provides a comprehensive system for managing complex business operations.
Why is this beneficial for Ukrainian businesses?
- Increased Transparency and Flexibility: Allows Ukrainian companies to clearly document business rules, simplifying adaptation to market changes and regulatory requirements.
- Effective Automation and Risk Reduction: Through clear decision modeling, businesses can implement automation more rapidly, reducing the human factor and increasing the consistency of operations.
- Improved Business-IT Collaboration: Standardized decision models are understandable to both business teams and developers, fostering better mutual understanding and accelerating the implementation of IT solutions.
