Token-Based Digital Signatures Enhance Security for Businesses

Protected carriers for digital signatures are becoming standard for government institutions and a key security element for Ukrainian businesses.

Storing private keys for electronic digital signatures (EDS) is critical for their security. Ukrainian legislation, specifically Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 1452 and the new Law of Ukraine “On Electronic Trust Services,” mandates the use of protected carriers, known as tokens, for storing EDS. This applies to government bodies, local self-government, state-owned enterprises, as well as state registrars and notaries, highlighting the increasing importance of hardware protection.

Deals media published an article on this topic, noting that their system has implemented the capability to sign electronic documents with EDS whose keys are stored on tokens. Tokens are specialized devices, similar to USB drives, that provide hardware protection for cryptographic operations and prevent unauthorized access to private keys. This solution allows the use of electronic keys such as “Crystal” and “Diamond,” enhancing information security levels.

Using EDS on protected carriers offers several advantages for Ukrainian businesses and the Intecracy Group audience:

  • Legal Compliance: Ensures adherence to current and future regulatory requirements regarding the use of qualified electronic signatures and protected carriers.
  • Enhanced Security: Hardware-based protection prevents compromise of private keys, which is fundamental for the integrity of electronic documents and transactions.
  • Reliable Interaction: Simplifies and secures electronic document exchange with government institutions and partners who are already required to use protected carriers.

The transition to using protected carriers for EDS is a significant step towards improving overall cybersecurity and trust in electronic document management in Ukraine.
